What is RSS?
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication (or Rich Site Summary). RSS is a way to easily distribute a list of headlines, update notices, and announcements to a wide number of people. In short, RSS is a list of items - a title, a summary, and a link to a webpage.
RSS works by having a website editor maintain a list of notifications on their website in a standard way. This list of notifications is called an "RSS Feed". Those interested in finding out the latest headlines or changes can check this list. Special computer programs called "RSS aggregators" or "RSS readers" have been developed that automatically access the RSS feeds of websites in which you are interested and organize the results for you.
Policy Matters is using RSS to post announcements of our reports, testimony, events, and other items of interest. While our eNews is updated periodically and e-mailed to subscribers, our RSS feed will be updated as each news event occurs.
You can learn more by reading the Wikipedia entry for RSS. Or, you could ask Jeeves.
How do I read RSS?
You can read RSS feeds in your web browser, in a standalone program, or by installing an add-on to your existing e-mail program. While Policy Matters does not endorse specific programs, we can provide you with some resources with which we are aware.
Web browser: this is probably the easiest way to get news feeds. Examples of such services include My Yahoo, Google Reader, Bloglines, and NewsBurst. They require that you establish an account; the account is free.
Standalone program: Download a program such as FeedReader for Windows, or Safari RSS for Mac and install it onto your computer.
Add-ons: InterVnews and NewsGator are add-on programs for Microsoft Outlook.
You can also look here or here for additional listings of RSS reading programs.
