366: Days remaining for Ohio schools to spend more than $358M on efforts to address learning loss, improve safety and update technology. That’s about 8% of the federal funding designated for those purposes as part of the American Rescue Plan signed by Pres. Biden in 2021. Youth, Opportunity & Education Researcher Tanisha Pruitt, PhD., explores some districts’ plans for the funds, and makes some recommendations in her latest blog post.
4: New staff members we’ve hired in the last few months: Sarah Rodenberg (she/they), Molly Bryden (she/her), Bailey Williams (he/him) and Kathryn Poe (they/them):
158,383: Number of times TikTok users watched Policy Matters videos in July, the month Sarah took over our account—an increase of roughly 1900% over the previous month. (Yes: 1,900%!) As Communications Associate, Sarah draws on her love of popular culture, language and storytelling to make our work more lively, accessible and fun. See her in action on TikTok, and all our social media channels!
6: Knitting projects Molly has started in the past year, but not yet completed. (You can’t rush good knitting!) As part of her recent fellowship with Cleveland Owns, Molly worked with Cleveland Solar Cooperative on a Know Your Bill event last month—check out her blog post about the event. Molly is our Climate & Sustainability Researcher, with a focus on ensuring Ohio communities get the most out of the accelerating transition to cleaner energy.
12: Number of Bailey’s neckties that are paisley, objectively the best pattern for ties. Coming to us fresh from an internship in the office of Sen. Sherrod Brown, Bailey has also clerked with the Ohio Innocence Project and MORTAR. As our Tax Policy Researcher, Bailey will use his background in economics and law to advance a tax system that supports working-class families.
40: Plants currently in Kathryn’s home, due to a self-care practice of adopting one houseplant each time Ohio’s legislature does something infuriating. As our Budget & Health Researcher, Kathryn will focus on the state budget, health policy and child care. Check out a sample of their writing in the new collection, Ohio under COVID: Lessons from America’s Heartland in Crisis, from University of Michigan Press.
