Overcoming Roadblocks to Health

All Ohioans deserve to live happy, healthy lives. However, a number of existing policies result in too many Ohioans working low-paying jobs with few benefits and residing in under-resourced and polluted communities. We can use Ohio’s budget to break down those barriers to a healthy life.

Budget Bite: Breaking down barriers to health

Ohio can be a state where people – whether black, white or brown – or whether they live in a city, a suburb or rural area – can live healthy, happy lives. Ohio’s poor health is tied to structural problems that affect all aspects of society, such as poverty, racism and income inequality—problems that can be addressed with policy solutions.

This interactive map highlights the 10% of Ohio neighborhoods where poverty is highly concentrated.

Living in an area of concentrated poverty is a roadblock to health. Residents are more likely to be exposed to air, water and noise pollution, highway dangers, low-quality housing. There is less greenspace and access to healthy foods is often limited.
