Mobilizing to decriminalize poverty

In September, 28, 2024, Ohioans affected by debt-related driver’s license suspensions gathered in Cleveland to work with and hear from advocates, organizers, and State Representative Darnell T. Brewer about new legislation that would limit the use of suspensions for an array of offenses.

The summit featured a panel with Bree Easterling, Policy Matters Ohio’s Social Justice Outreach and Organizing Specialist; Zack Eckles, Attorney and Policy Advocate with the Ohio Poverty Law Center; Rep. Brewer, from Ohio’s District 18; and Mike Jones, Justice Housing Strategist with the Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless.

Moderated by Anna Odegaard, Sr. Advocacy & Campaigns Strategist from the Fines & Fees Justice Center, the panel dug into the lived experience of people whose licenses were suspended, the legal and legislative options available, and the ongoing policy research and advocacy happening around the state.

Linda Howard delivered the keynote address. Linda is the founder and CEO of Young Mothers of Cleveland, and chairs Building Freedom Ohio’s Onboarding Committee.
